Whether you’re an aspiring artist or an experienced creative, ‘The Rookies’ provides a unique platform to showcase your talent, connect with industry professionals, and earn recognition through prestigious awards.

The Rookies, founded in 2009, is an international online platform that encourages and empowers young creatives across various fields like animation, games, virtual reality, motion graphics, and 3D visualization. This community fuels creative passion, offering a launchpad for its members to reach staggering heights in their respective fields. Where most other platforms simply act as galleries, The Rookies is all about reaching your goals. On The Rookies, you will find resources, tutorials, courses, lectures and a directory of the top art schools in the world, including Syn Studio!  Not only that, it gives you a chance to see the level of work that your peers are doing.  Instead of doom scrolling or watching reels of the latest trend, this is where every ambitious artist should be!

Why Should You Create a Profile?

Creating a profile on The Rookies not only enables you to showcase your work but it also opens up a world of opportunities. The Rookies has 5 rankings for artists: Debut, Player, Contender, Rookie and Pro, designed to help artists track their growth and progress. Each rank represents a milestone on your creative journey rather than a grade. Starting from ‘Debut’, each artist can ascend through ‘Player’, ‘Contender’, ‘Rookie’ and finally reach ‘Pro’ status. This system serves as a motivational ladder rather than a grading scale, encouraging artists to collect badges and certificates to elevate their status and showcase their hard-earned skills

From getting your work evaluated by industry professionals to networking with like-minded individuals and potential hiring managers – the benefits are endless. Moreover, there’s a sense of camaraderie and shared passion that makes The Rookies a nurturing space for emerging talent.

Syn Studio’s Meet the Artist is our ongoing series of interviews with artists from various backgrounds that

give you a glimpse into the career’s of these artists. Read on to become inspired by their experiences and advice!

Where are you currently working at?

EA Motive, Concept Artist, Iron Man

Could you detail your professional career (companies you have worked at, projects you have worked on,… anything pertinent) ?

After graduating from Syn Studio, I started at Ubisoft Montreal as a concept artist on Rainbow six Quarantine, mainly focusing on creature design. I then left Ubisoft to join EA Motive on an unannounced title before eventually starting on Iron Man.

What would you say is the most distinctive trait of your art?

I think one distinctive trait of my art is in the variety of techniques that I like to use. I consider myself more of a generalist and from my background in animation and 3D, I like to use techniques and skills I picked up from that in my concept art.

Tell us about the moment when you knew that you wanted to be a professional artist?

I attended a presentation from a guest speaker who showed some of the matte painting work they had done for films and I remember being in awe of the detail. I loved the world building aspect of the art that they were showing and I knew that was what I wanted to do which ultimately led me to concept art.

If you weren’t making art, what else would you see yourself doing?

I think I would probably pursue a culinary career. I love to cook and I enjoy the creative aspect of it. Also my family is filled with amazing cooks and good food has always been a big part of my life.

Do you have any personal projects that you’re working on now?

I usually have 10+ personal projects in progress at any one time, ranging from larger animation projects I slowly chip away at from time to time to smaller illustrations I’ll start and plan to finish at a later time.

What was the most valuable lesson you’ve received at Syn Studio ?

Thinking back to my time at Syn Studio I think the area I appreciated being able to grown in was actually just communicating with other artist, both our teachers, my peers and general networking. I think that’s what really drew me to attend a concept art school and I feel like I was able to grow that skill which has helped me in my career.

What advice you’d wish somebody would have given you when you started your artistic journey?

Looking back at my journey I think my biggest take away that I continue to try and pass along now is to be more conscious of the advice you hear and what you take from it. As the industry continues to grow, there are more people sharing advice and giving guidance to help others, which I think is great. What I don’t particularly like is the way that this information is sometimes communicated. You’ll often hear “you HAVE to do this if you want a job” or “you WON’T succeed unless you do this”, etc. and what it can end up doing is making younger artists feel like there is only one pathway forward and end up getting confused when they hear contradicting information. Listen to what they have to say but understand that advice is advice, what worked for one person might not work for you and vice versa. Keep an open mind and find the method that works for you.

Teacher Artwork by Donna Shvil

Who is teaching?

Donna Shvil is one of our most popular teachers.  You likely know her from Foundations of Drawing I and Foundations of Drawing II, or perhaps you remember her as our guide during the Figure Drawing Workshops.  Donna has guided so many artists on their first steps of their artistic journey.

Teacher Artwork by André Pijet

André Pijet is one of the teacher’s that have been teaching at Syn Studio the longest.  His versatility of skills has allowed him to guide beginner artists to hone their skills in classes like Analytical Sketching and Fundamentals of Perspective.

Foundations of Drawing

This is our 101 class.  Foundations of Drawing is the best starting point for beginners and is a great option for those who need a refresher.

We have two sections for this class:
Section A in English with Donna Shvil – Sundays from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM
Section B in French with André Pijet – Saturdays from 12 PM to 3 PM

Analytical Sketching

This class will help you learn how to draw anything by breaking it down into its basic shapes then render lights and shadows to bring it to life.

Bilingual with André Pijet – Saturdays from 4 PM to 7 PM

Fundamentals of Perspective

Aside from maybe anatomy, perspective can be one of the most challenging subjects for artists to study.  Having a good teacher makes this so much easier and you will start making more believable drawings of people, objects and structures in no time!

Art is one of the first ways we learn to interpret the world as small children.  Before we can even speak, we scribble on paper (or walls when our parents weren’t looking), and while those drawings don’t look like much to others, children can clearly identify that mess of lines as a cat or a house or a family.

Visual elements are vital to storytelling for children.  They are still too young to understand the abstract words on a page but by adding pictures, children are immediately able to see what the characters look like and better understand the world the story takes place in.  Not only will a good illustration allow a child to better understand and appreciate the story being read, but connecting images to words is an important stage in developing language skills.  This same connection is even used by many adults when learning a new language.

Children’s Literature Illustration as a Career

Children’s storybooks use a wide range of styles but typically have cute and whimsical illustrations with either vibrant or soft pastel colours.  These styles not only work well for storybooks but also work well for magazines and advertising geared towards children and families.  Of course, these types of illustrations also lend themselves really well to journals, daily planners and stickers as well.

Syn Studio is currently offering both a new webinar and a new class that are focused on illustrating children’s literature.  Both of these are great ways to get a feel for children’s illustration without either a big time or financial commitment.

Crafting a Creative Career: Geneviève Godbout’s Journey in Children’s Illustration

For those who are interested in exploring the magical world of children’s story artwork, on March 1st, Geneviève Godbout will be discussing how to navigate the world of freelance illustration and will share her workflow and experiences as a children’s literature artist.

Geneviève uses soft pastel colours to create a sense of warmth and nostalgia.  She is known for her illustrations for Johnny Appleseed (Little Golden Books), Goodnight Anne and Apple Cake.

Join Geneviève on March 1st at 1pm EST (GMT – 5) for this exclusive event!  Tickets are only $25 and upon purchase you will be able to submit questions to Geneviève in advance.  Like all of our webinars, the live webinar will be recorded and can be watched for a limited time afterwards.  You can purchase your ticket HERE.

Children’s Book Illustration

If you are keen on illustrating a storybook yourself then you might need a more thorough guide.  Illustrator Tim Mack has joined Syn Studio’s roster of incredible teachers and this Spring will be teaching an all-new class: Children’s Book Illustration.

This new class will cover a lot of subjects pertaining to illustration children’s literature.  From how to create page layouts and find a balance between art and text, to artistic choices such as stylization and selecting the right colour palette to bring your story to life.

The lessons, demonstrations and exercises will culminate in a final illustration piece that blends all of these aspects as well as your own creative touch.

Children’s Book Illustration will be held on Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm starting April 10th.  This class iis already proving to be popular.  Sign up today if you want to be part of this exciting new class this Spring.  Seats are limited so don’t wait!

Syn Studio’s Meet the Artist is our ongoing series of interviews with artists from various backgrounds that

give you a glimpse into the career’s of these artists. Read on to become inspired by their experiences and advice!

Where are you currently working at?

Virtuos Montreal

Could you detail your professional career?

I’ve been at Virtuos Montreal since 2020 and in that time I’ve worked on a few really cool projects. I wish I could talk about them but unfortunately none have been released yet! Until then were in “just trust me bro!” territory.

What would you say is the most distinctive trait of your art?

That’s kind of hard to describe, but I like to think the most distinctive trait of my work comes from the sense of fun in the ideas portrayed. Even when it’s a squiggly, scumbled, hard-round brushed and photobashed mess of a piece, if it’s a cool render and the idea works then I think I’ve made out ok!

Tell us about the moment when you knew that you wanted to be a professional artist?

I’ve wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember, it’s one of those things that has just always been there. But I didn’t know I wanted to be a concept artist, specifically, until the fall of 2013. I was working towards a BA in Communication Arts (an expensive way of saying Illustration) and we had exactly one required class for Concept Art taught by the artist TyRuben Ellingson. It sounds stupid, but I just didn’t realize this was a job you could have until then. I thought stuff like this just happened on an ILM server somewhere in California, but then this guy is showing us all how he made his career in Hollywood using basically just printer paper, copic markers and Sketchup! Something just clicked. All my interests, my skills at the time, I knew this was something I could do. My whole career aim changed pretty drastically from then on….thank goodness it worked out.

If you weren’t making art, what else would you see yourself doing?

I had a job in Broadcast Design before coming to Montreal, so probably that. If I wasn’t doing anything related to art or design though, I don’t know….HVAC repair?

Do you have any personal projects that you’re working on now?

A few things actually! (when I find the time around work/life) One that’s been on pause is a reimagining of a cartoon from the early 2000’s called Megas XLR. It’s kind of a love letter to the Mech genre and 80’s anime, but with American muscle cars. Another idea I’m starting to explore is a Sergio Leone/Akira Kurosawa inspired retro-futurist western. It might not work but…I think it could be awesome!

Can you tell us about an artist that you think everybody should know ?

I’m going to shout out TyRuben Ellingson here again, definitely check out his work. But If you are trying to get into concept art and you don’t know who Syd Mead is, stop for a moment and be ashamed of yourself. Sit in your wrongness and be wrong. Then Google him and pretend like you always knew what kind of impact he had through his work.

What is the best memory you have from your time at Syn Studio?

When Pierre Raveneau crashed our class with Remko Troost and brought enough Sapporo to share with the class. That and the Gathering of The Masters event, meeting a bunch of artists and seeing demos from different pros in the industry was invaluable.

What was the most valuable lesson you’ve received at Syn Studio ?

Don’t f*ck with the office staff 😉

What advice you’d wish somebody would have given you when you started your artistic journey?

Events, conferences, and galas are great, but the real networking is done over drinks at the bars afterward.

Thank you for making 2023 such an awesome year!  Despite such a turbulent year, it was great to see so many of you choose to better yourselves as artists.  The team at Syn Studio has worked hard to bring you the best learning options, new teachers and new ways to make our services more affordable.

As we look to the New Year, we wanted to take a moment to look back on some of the highlights from 2023.  Syn Studio had a lot of exciting updates throughout the year and we have a few more projects in the works for the future.

NEW PUBLIC PORTFOLIO REVIEWS

Fall 2023 saw us expand our portfolio review sessions that were previously only available to full time students (3 or more classes).  While these review sessions are still free for full time students,  anyone can now reserve a session for only $30.

The schedule of these sessions is dependent on the availability of our reviewers.  Last term we had 6 different artists reviewing portfolios!  We will be announcing the new reviewers and their time slots in a few weeks.

Why get a portfolio review?

Syn Studio’s classes are a big commitment, both in time and finances.  Getting a portfolio review can help you figure out where you need to improve.  That means you can figure out which class is right for you before committing to a class or two.

ONSITE CLASSES ARE BACK!

2023 saw the long awaited return of Onsite Classes!

We partnered with some of our teachers to provide our classes at their studios.  We know many of you still want more and we will see what 2024 brings!

WEBINARS

This year we only had three webinars: Observational Sketching with Sorie Kim, The Story of Storyboarding with John Mathot and A Career in Animation with Mike Wiesmeier.

John’s webinar was one of our most popular yet and was a great spotlight on an underappreciated part of the entertainment industry.

Which webinar was your favourite in 2023?  We will announce the next webinar soon!  Feel free to let us know which artists you’d like to hear from!

NEW TEACHER!

Syn Studio was proud to welcome Sunshine Kim to our roster of teachers this year!

She has proven to not only be a popular teacher but her students have nothing but great things to say about her class!
This winter, Sunshine will be teaching Character Rendering!

EXCITING NEW CLASSES

Syn Studio is always trying to bring you new classes based on your needs and the skills of our teachers.

This year saw the introduction of some fun new classes:

Advanced Figure Drawing with Amirhossein Yaghoobi

Digital Figure Painting with Sunshine Kim

Cut Out Animation with Mike Wiesmeier

Did you take any of these classes?

We have more new classes in the works for 2024.  We will let you know more soon!

Collage of Student artwork by Shimon Alankri, Yosef Roitman and Jose Islas

Fundamentals Bootcamp

This year also saw the introduction of our Fundamentals Bootcamp.  The Fundamentals Bootcamp is divided into two sections.  These classes are what we consider quintessential learning from Syn Studio.  The classes that have been selected will teach you the skills that all artists should have in their repertoire.

Each section features 4 classes so that you still have plenty of time for homework without being overwhelmed.  Best of all, the Fundamentals Bootcamp comes at a discounted price, compared to buying each class individually and you get free access to the webinar offered the same term you take the bootcamp.

Part I:
Analytical Sketching
Drawing the Human Form
Fundamentals of Perspective
Intro to Digital Painting

Part II:
Constructive Figure Drawing
Digital Painting
Digital Sketching for Production
Dynamic Drawing

ONLINE CONCEPT ART PROGRAM

Perhaps the most exciting news of the year was the launch of our Online Concept Art Program!

This 12 month program gives you concept art training that will allow you to create a professional level concept art portfolio.  Best of all this program allows you to learn from the comfort of your own home.  With the rising costs of living in most parts of the world, the Online Concept Art Program means that you can train for your dream job without breaking the bank.

Our first batch of students started in September and their hard work is already paying off.  They have already improved so much and we are excited to show off their art next year!

More to come in 2024

Thank you for making 2023 such an amazing year for Syn Studio.  We are so proud to see the artistic growth of our students and we are eager to see what you create in 2024!  In the New Year we will announce the next batch of portfolio review sessions, our next webinars, and more!

Cestar Collège – Syn Studio is always overjoyed to see our alumni succeed.  We are proud to announce that one of our students, Natasha N.M, better known as HYPNOTIK MIND, has just had her very own art exhibition launch at the Parcours Gouin Reception Pavilion.  The exhibition, named Hypnosis, just opened on October 5th and will run until December 10th and features seven of Natasha’s vibrant works.

About Natasha

Natasha lives in Ahuntsic (a neighbourhood on the northside of the island of Montreal) where she works 4 days a week at the Ahuntsic Library while also working on her artwork.  She always liked drawing but it was only when in university that she took a painting class and fell in love.

“I took a painting course at the university and drawing courses at Cestar College – Syn Studio.”

Since then she has explored various other mediums and creative endeavours including digital art, jewelry making and painting on clothing.  Her artwork was featured in the Afro-Quécécois Art Festival at the Musée de la civilisation in Quebec City earlier this year.  Hypnosis marks her first solo exhibition.

“The exhibition includes abstract and symbolic paintings that focus on consciousness, reflection, self-seeking and exploring the inner child in a playful and colourful context.”

It brings us immense pride to see the success and achievements of our alumni, knowing that our teachers were able to give you the keys to thrive in the professional world.  What makes Cestar Collège – Syn Studio different from other art schools is our focus on students gaining skill.  We offer Onsite and Online art classes, across different levels – from beginner to expert, to help you become a better artist.    All of our teachers work in some form in the entertainment industry and have hands-on experience that they are eager to share with you.  If you are a curious, passionate or ambitious artist, willing to put in the effort, then sign up for classes at Cestar Collège – Syn Studio and join our growing list of successful alumni!

Syn Studio’s Meet the Artist is our ongoing series of interviews with artists from various backgrounds that

give you a glimpse into the career’s of these artists. Read on to become inspired by their experiences and advice!

Where are you currently working at?

Concept Artist at EA Motive currently working on Ironman.

Could you detail your professional career?

Worked previously in Ubisoft Montreal on Rainbow Six: Extraction.

What would you say is the most distinctive trait of your art?

Shapes and Storytelling.

Tell us about the moment when you knew that you wanted to be a professional artist?

I was 23 and completely oblivious to concept art before that. It was during my Masters in English Literature when by complete accident I happened to take up a course in Book Publishing and Design. We had to design book covers for fictional books that we were pitching in class. I found out about digital art from Youtube and subsequently concept art. The very fact that one can make a living by doing this blew my mind!

If you weren’t making art, what else would you see yourself doing?

Probably be in academia. Or a professional to-do list maker.

Do you have any personal projects that you’re working on now?

Yes, but on most days the personal projects don’t seem too keen on working with me.

Can you tell us about an artist that you think everybody should know ?

Chase Stone!

If you could have dinner with anyone (dead or living), who would that be and why?

That list is extensive but today I will pick Neil Gaiman. There’s an effortless quality to his writing which I feel transcends a specific type of art form, it’s almost visual but not at the same time. Very vivid.

What is the best memory you have from your time at Syn Studio?

The quiet afternoons I spent at Syn with my friends, who were always there for the whole day, like me, working on our graduation portfolios. We gave each other feedback, shared meals and laughter. We did that for 7 days a week, almost every week for 6 months. Still my favorite time in all of my 7 years in Montreal.

What was the most valuable lesson you’ve received at Syn Studio ?

Everyone comes to level-up in their art skills however the very best leave with excellent soft-skills as well.

What is the best piece of advice you were ever given in your career?

Always have a reference image for everything you’re doing. And don’t be attached to a specific image that you’re making, if you’re getting paid to make it, it probably wasn’t yours to begin with.

We are really happy and excited to announce that we are introducing a new Fundamentals Bootcamp program, available for selection for the Fall 2023 Term and beyond.

Teacher Artwork by Nino Vecia

What is the Fundamentals Bootcamp?

Our Fundamentals Bootcamp is a structured program comprising of a focused set of classes that are optimally grouped to help beginners, who are starting their artistic journey, learn and strengthen their fundamental art skills.

Far too often, beginner artists, who dream of becoming a top concept artist, traditional artist or an illustrator, avoid practicing important fundamental skills such as perspective and anatomy, either because it is too hard, or because they feel its a waste of time, or worse, because they find it boring. Shortcuts are great but skipping these fundamental skills lessons early in their artistic training will deprive the students of the solid art foundation that is essential to build when they work on more complex projects in the future and wish to build a successful career.

Fundamentals Bootcamp Program Features

Our Fundamentals Bootcamp is divided into terms. Each term features 4 courses scheduled over a period of 10 weeks. Students interested in attending the Bootcamp are recommended to attend all the classes to ensure optimal progression in their learning process. Fundamentals Bootcamps can be purchased separately (Part 1 or Part 2) or together (Part 1 and Part 2) for additional savings. It is advised that the students take these terms consecutively for best results.

While we suggest following the classes in both Part 1 and Part 2, if the student has already developed sufficient skills in the topics covered in Part 1, they can choose to follow just Part 2 on its own, skipping Part 1. However, in this case, the student will be required to submit examples of their artwork once registered.

Students registered in the Fundamentals Bootcamp will also receive the following perks (each term):

  1. A discounted price on each class in the term
  2. Free access to exclusive online resource library
  3. A free spot in the term’s featured Webinar or Q&A session with a renowned artist and
  4. A free spot in the one-on-one portfolio review with a professional concept artist scheduled for the term
